In Sandy Joe, a streetwise boy struggles to protect the little girl in his care as a hidden truth about her past begins to surface. As danger and difficult choices arise, he must rely on courage and a determination to do what is right, no matter the cost.

Adventure Stories of Courage, Faith, & Integrity

The Catholic Cliffhanger Series brings rare, action-filled Catholic adventure novels back into print, with language and references adjusted for today’s readers.

Set in early–1900s America, the novels follow young heroes whose adventures demand honesty, courage, and steadfast faith. Themes of self-sacrifice, keeping one’s word, and standing for the truth are woven naturally into the narrative, forming character through example rather than instruction.

The books provide entertaining reading for boys (and adventurous girls) in grades 4 and up. They also make excellent nightly read-alouds for the whole family. These books will have your family sitting on the edge of their seats. But if you think you can stop at the end of one chapter, be prepared for a chorus of “Just one more chapter, pleeeze?”

Mary T. Waggaman (1846–1931) was one of the most beloved Catholic authors of her time. A mother of eleven, she had searched for Catholic books that would hold a boy’s attention, but with no success. Instead of giving up, she decided to write one herself. She went on to write more than twenty books for children.

Her stories became widely known for their strong Catholic spirit, memorable characters, and engaging plots. Loved by both children and adults, her books have formed generations of readers and continue to do so today.

My 6-year-old son LOVES Devotional Stories for Little Folks. The books and stories are deceptively simple in that you think you are just reading a funny story about another homeschooling family, but each story is a moral lesson in itself. Our book is dog-eared from the amount of time my son spends reading this book, in bed, huddled in a corner, in his make-shift fort, in the car – all over the place.

“Our daughter reading to her doll on the new sofa.” —Silvia, CA

Devotional Stories for Little Folks really speaks to my daughter's heart. She can relate to the characters (losing at checkers, having a difficult time sitting still during the Mass), and that captures her attention like little else ever has.

My 12-year-old son still enjoys returning to Devotional Stories for Little Folks. He is a “challenging” boy, and the stories offer him gentle reminders about appropriate behaviors and attitudes. He is also enjoying reading them to his preschool little brother and pointing out the lessons contained in the stories.

The other day at a homeschool meeting, I read aloud a story from Devotional Stories for Little Folks. Afterwards, three parents approached me and wanted to know where I got the book. One mom said, “The readers we use with our program are just depressing! Is that really one of the readers you use with CHC?” I was so happy to say, “Why, yes, it is!”

I am extremely pleased with CHC's Devotional Stories for Little Folks. My son loves all the characters and looks forward to the many adventures they go through—and the many faith lessons they learn. A real winner!
