Q: Next Fall, our two oldest children will be in high school. The oldest will be in 11th grade and the youngest will be in 9th grade. We are looking for a writing program for our two sons that will help them to improve their writing.

I looked at the samples for the level 3 and 4 Writing Workshops by Sandra Garant, but still cannot get good sense of exactly what they will include. Is there any way to view a syllabus or some other course description that will give me more specifics about what the assignments are like, how many assignments are included, etc.?

A: Thank you for your interest in the Writing Workshops. I am happy to give you more information about these workshops.

You mention that you are interested in Levels 3 and 4. All four levels of the Writing Workshops follow the same format. There are six lessons per level with additional review assignments provided at the end of the workshop. Each lesson contains (1) information about an aspect of writing (2) suggested reading related to the lesson (3) a game or activity (4) the writing assignment and (5) a checklist for self-evaluation of the writing.

Level 3 contains the following lessons:

(1) word choice, the specific meaning of words, and inventing words
(2) descriptive writing and use of the imagination
(3) questions and interviews
(4) repetition and rhythm and writing for a specific audience
(5) cause and effect and recycling plots
(6) creating tension and pacing narratives

Level 4 contains the following lessons:

(1) dialogue and conflict
(2) main plots and developing characters
(3) subplots
(4) research, plagiarism, parody, and citations
(5) standard essay pattern
(6) nonstandard essays and essayists

Levels 3 and 4 also include a final section called “Think about It” that carries the lesson even further into the real world of writing, writers, and the use of writing. This section gives students further ideas on how to improve and use their writing.

I hope this information will help you with your decision.

Best regards,

Sandra Garant
